At The Hope Effect, we believe every child deserves a family. We envision a future where every child grows up knowing the warmth of a loving family...and no child lives within the cold walls of an institution.
That’s why we are changing the way the world cares for orphans by providing loving family care for orphaned and vulnerable children around the world. And we are so grateful you share our mission and passion!
Changing the way the world cares for orphans is a big job, but we know you’re up for the challenge. So as we kick off the new year, we wanted to share a few details about our strategy…the problem we’re trying to solve, and exactly how - with your support - we are working around the world to help kids find loving families.
The Problem…and our solution
Millions of children around the world are growing up without the love of a family. And in most developing countries, the primary way these children are cared for is in large institutions, commonly known as orphanages. However, there is clear and compelling research on the damaging physical and psychological effects of traditional, institutional orphan care.
When children do not receive adequate personal interaction within a loving environment, development is stunted and learning abilities are delayed or lost. Many kids age out only to face a future of crime, prostitution, or trafficking.
The research is clear - children do best in families.
That’s why, with your support, The Hope Effect is changing orphan care by providing family-based solutions. Loving family care provides opportunities for each child to flourish and thrive.

PIONEERING PUBLIC FAMILY-STYLE CARE
First, The Hope Effect is pioneering family care in several locations around the world.
In simplest terms, this means we are bringing family-style orphan care to locations where it does not exist. We change the primary care model of orphaned and vulnerable children by pioneering family care programs. To accomplish this, we partner with local governments to develop innovative, sustainable solutions.
This is our approach in Sonora, Michoacán, and Colima, Mexico. We are thrilled that thanks to you, children in these locations are getting out of orphanages and into loving families.
Partnering with proven accelerators
The second element of our strategy to change the way the world cares for orphans is to partner with proven accelerators to help more children find loving families.
Over the years, we’ve met several like-minded organizations that, like us, know that children belong in families. With your support, we come alongside those organizations and partner with them to help the family care movement grow faster…which ultimately results in more kids getting out of orphanages and into loving families.
Primarily, we work through partnerships to accelerate family care programs and facilitate the reintegration of children who are currently living in orphanages back into their families. Our partnerships strengthen others through leadership development, strategic planning, communications frameworks, and financial investments. Together we are changing the way the world cares for orphans faster!
We have had wonderful partnerships in our locations in Nuevo León, Mexico; Chihuahua, Mexico; Santa Rosa, Honduras; Chiang Mai, Thailand; and Battambang, Cambodia. You are making such a difference and changing so many lives in each of these locations. We are so grateful to you for making it all possible.
Promoting a better way to places of worship
Finally, we promote a better way of caring for orphaned and vulnerable children to places of worship.
A recent study shows that approximately $2.5 billion a year is given from churches in the United States to orphanages around the world. Good-hearted churches and individuals are unknowingly supporting and funding an orphan care structure that is damaging children and breaking up families.
Our strategy is to raise awareness about the dangers of institutional orphan care and educate about the importance of family in a child’s life. By promoting a better way of orphan care to churches and people of faith in the United States, we believe we can generate even more momentum for the family care movement around the world.
