The Hope Effect is now changing lives in Colima, Mexico!
You may remember that earlier this year, we were invited to speak to all government attorneys in Mexico regarding family care at a national conference. We were optimistic that the event would lead to additional opportunities for expansion in Mexico…and here we are!
Shortly after the conference, the government of Colima invited us to pioneer family care in their state. We are thrilled the government understands the importance of family in every child’s life. Earlier this week, Executive Director Joe Darago traveled to Colima to sign the contract with the government, and now the work begins!
We’re so thankful for the opportunity to ensure orphaned and vulnerable children in Colima will grow up knowing the love of a family…and it’s all thanks to you. Read on to learn more about how you’ll be changing lives in Colima!
The Need
Colima is a small state in western Mexico on the central Pacific coast. In fact, it’s the 4th smallest state in Mexico, but its population density is high. Most residents live in the capital city and in other urban areas.
And just like our other locations in Mexico, there is still a need to help orphaned and vulnerable children. There are 30 orphanages in the state of Colima, with children in government care ranging in ages from 0-11. However, there is clear and compelling research showing that institutional care in an orphanage has damaging effects on children.
We know there’s a better way. We know every child deserves a family.
That’s why we are so grateful that the government of Colima wants a better future for their children and has already legalized family care. Now, The Hope Effect is working with the government to develop and implement a successful family care program.
Our Approach
We are currently in the process of opening our office and hiring local staff to facilitate the program.
When we pioneer family care, we are involved in all stages of the process - recruiting new foster families, evaluating interested families, training and certifying the families, assisting with the placement of children, and following up with children and families to ensure a successful transition into family care.
We keep a low ratio of 1 staff member to every 15 children to ensure we can provide personalized follow up for each family. You can be assured that when you support our work, you are supporting quality care and a high standard of excellence.
We’ve successfully implemented this tried and true model throughout Mexico. And we know that thanks to you, more children in Colima will grow up knowing what it means to be part of a loving family.
