The Journey to Healing: Abigail’s Story

As an infant, Abigail’s mother left her in the care of a widowed woman in Honduras. The woman was unsure where Abigail’s mother went and when (or if) her mother would ever return. She did her best to care for Abigail, but she did not have the means to feed her, clothe her, or keep her warm during the freezing winter temperatures. As a result, the woman was often unable to comfort the baby girl.

Local church members sometimes helped provide food and clothing, but it became clear the woman could not provide the care Abigail needed. Another member of the community contacted DINAF (child protective services in Honduras) to let them know about the situation.

Thankfully, Abigail was not taken to an orphanage after the authorities were called. Because of your support, Abigail was taken to the crisis care center at Legacy of Hope, our partners in Santa Rosa, Honduras. It was there she would begin her journey to healing.

Finding A Family

Right away, our team in Honduras could tell Abigail had suffered a great deal of trauma and loss at such a young age. Because she had never received proper care, she struggled to trust. And even as a baby, Abigail seemed confused by the care she was receiving.

When the government was unable to locate Abigail’s mother or any other family members, our team began the process of placing Abigail in family-style care. She moved into a transitional home to receive family-style care while waiting for a foster family to be trained and certified. A few months later, Abigail was welcomed into a loving family.

Hope and Healing

Through the love of a family, Abigail began to heal. She remained with that family for several years, receiving the love, care, and individual attention every child needs and deserves. Abigail is thriving, and we are so thankful for the changes in this beautiful little girl.

The fragile, scared, and untrusting baby has grown into a bright, happy, healthy little girl. She knows she is valued, cherished, and loved.

Recently, Abigail had her final abandonment hearing with the government of Honduras, meaning she will soon be eligible to be adopted. As she entered the judge’s chambers, Abigail’s confidence and personality were shining bright. She proudly told the judge her name and the name of her foster mother, and true to form for a spunky little girl, she then became very curious to learn about everyone’s family pets.

Today, Abigail is excited about the possibility of finding her adoptive family. While it will certainly be a big change, we know the love she received in family-style care has prepared her for the eventual transition to her forever family.

This is all possible because of you! Thanks to your support, Abigail has grown up knowing the love of a family…and we are forever grateful. Thank you for being Abigail’s hero!

Your continued generosity is helping kids like Abigail find loving family-style care. You are changing lives in Honduras…and in Mexico, and Thailand! And we’re just days away from another opportunity for you to once again give a lifetime of hope to children around the world.

November 30 is GivingTuesday. We would be honored if you would partner with us on this global day of generosity to help more orphaned and vulnerable children find families.

Your generosity on last year’s GivingTuesday allowed us to grow into two new locations in the last 12 months…Michoacán, Mexico and Chiang Mai, Thailand. Imagine what your gift this year will do!

This GivingTuesday, our goal of $100,000 will be used to expand family-style care even further in our locations in Mexico, Honduras, and Thailand. Plus, you can double your impact…a generous team of donors will match every donation dollar-for-dollar…up to $50,000!

And there’s no need to wait until November 30! If you’d like to jump in early, our donation site is up and running! All gifts made on this donation site will be matched, even if you give early.

As always, thank you for your generosity and partnership. You are changing lives…and together, we are changing the way the world cares for orphans!
